Info & Tutorials - RUST SDW - WEAR SDW

Their  main feature is the gradation / blending capability, unthinkable for other acrylic products, and really easier and pleasant than oil paints !

  • Slower drying time compared other acrylics - SDW = slow drying watersoluble -
  • Extremely pleasant and flowy for brush
  • for airbrush- they never clog nozzles
  • Blend-able - gradation capability like oil paints
  • Use them as you like both in their fluid state or leaving them get denser before use, down to a pasty-like condition
  • In their out-of-the-bottle fluid condition they avail smooth and progressive effects
  • In the dense condition they have a higher opacity, and are suited for textured effects and drybrush.
  • The whole into an exclusive solvent free, odourless formulation
  • No specific thinners, just water when needed
  • Removable with soapy water

  • Estremamente piacevoli e scorrevoli a pennello

Hues

TERI 01 to 04 are the actual rust tones

TERI 05 (only available into the rust set) can be used as the lightest rust tone. But also to lighten up the other references, keeping a high saturation of the hue.

TERI06 Metal Oxide Dark and TERI07 Metal Oxide Light are mixable with the other Rust SDW references to tone down / scale down the saturation of rust, in darker  or lighter hues. Thus getting neverending effects of altered metal to full rust. They too have the same blend-ability and removability properties of the other Rust SDW references.

Despite being an - advanced - acrylic formulation, Rust SDW products are used in a very similar way to oil paints. With the difference that they are even easier and more pleasant !

Spread them on dry or water-wet surfaces. Gradation / blending with dry or wet - water only - brushes, for numberless results.

Some samples follow.

Soft Leaks 1

Spread Rust SDW on a dry paint, and create the transition by passing over or tapping along the edge with a dry brush.

Colature Sfumate 1

Soft leaks 2

Alternative method for gradation : spread Rust SDW slightly thinned in water, then pass a water-wet brush along the edges of leaks, shades, stains...

Colature Sfumate 2

Chipping

To increase opacity of Rust SDW products there are two ways : Mixing them with SDW Shading Colors o leaving a small amount to get dense before application.

When chipping has dried, place droplets of a lighter tone of Rust SDW.

Pull downwards with a soft, dry brush. Then pull upwards. This way you obtain a gradation on the surface.

You can further soften the effect on the edges with a moist brush. Done !

Scrostature

Fatto !

Large Stains

To obtain a slightly patterned and textured gradation, gently texture along the separation line with a dry brush. In this sample, the Rust SDW are spread undiluted on a dry, matt paint. If Rust SDW are let to get denser before spreading them on the surface, the pattern will be more pronounced.

Macchie diffuse

Gradation

Delicate transitions are obtained by blending Rust SDW together "a fresco".

Undiluted Rust SDW, better if slightly denser,  and you create the transition by tapping gently the contact point between two tones with a dry brush.

Sfumatura

Melting w/Paint

You can blend and/or melt them together with SDW Shading Colors and SDW Shading Metals,  validly replacing olis wit  blend-able but solvent free and smellfree products. And with drying times long enough to guarantee workability, but more contained than oil paints. And without the need to previously protect paints with layers of clear varnishes.

Airbrushed Pattern

A very interesting technique, allowed by peculiar formulation of Rust SDW products : also when airbrushed undiluted at a minimum pressure, they do not dry on the nozzle, thus clogging the airbrush.

Lower the pressure at the minimum availed and spray at the maximum aperture. You will easily obtain realistic patterns.

In this exsample, pressure ab.0,3 bar - 0,4 psi - and nozzle 0,2 mm.
